Protecting your Children’s Eyes in the Home

In honor of Home and Sports Eye Safety Month, this post will focus on ways to keep your house safe for your eyes particularly in purchasing toys that are safe for your kid's eyes. Don't wait until it's too late to make sure your home environment doesn't pose any series dangers to your children's eyes.

In general, kids enter the world with a partially developed visual system that develops with them. As part of normal infant optical development, infants can see objects only up close. Throughout their developing stages, children are visually stimulated. Children's games and toys can be one of the best methods for stimulating children's vision. However, at the same time, it's important to remember that a large number of childhood accidents take place at home, many of them with toys.

How can you prevent accidents from happening? Here is some quick advice for selecting toys and games for the house that are safe for your child's eyes.

Firstly, make sure toys with long handles - such as sticks- aren't sharp-edged, and carefully supervise kids under two with such toys. Though building blocks pose little danger for almost all ages, it's important to make sure the corners are blunted, in order to reduce the risk of eye or other bodily injury. It's advised that you avoid toys that shoot objects in the air, such as arrows or guns. In an instance where this is not possible, then shooting toys should be monitored by a responsible grown-up. If your older child uses chemicals or tools, make sure he or she wears safety glasses.

What else can be dangers in your house? Toys are actually just the beginning. As a parent, it's your task to scout around your home and make sure there's nothing that could endanger your child's eyes. The number one danger is cleaning materials that haven't been stored in a safe place. If a child can reach these chemicals they are at great risk.

Yes, toys can occasionally cause harm, but it's important to not forget about all of the benefits they offer. There are many toys tailored to specific ages that provide amazing ways to grow visual development. When selecting toys for children, look for those that emphasize coordination between the hands and eyes and will encourage kids to learn about spatial relationships. You may want to consider trying to do some research before heading to the toy store. Then you can guarantee that your purchase is safe for your child's eyes and will enrich their visual development at the same time!
